Chapter 10 Cookie Party Fiasco

“Katelyn I’m about to go crazy. Your cousin is driving me insane.” I stared at her projected image. I was so flustered I could hardly stand it. It was bad enough that Tony was dating me still along with several other girls, but he was also setting me up with the most unattractive men he could possibly find.

“Oh no, what’s he doing now?”

“Do you know who I went out with last night?”

“No, but by the sounds of it, whoever it was, wasn’t very good.”

“You can say that again, but don’t. It was none…other…than, Harry Mackley.”

“Oh no, you’ve got to be kidding! What is Tony thinking setting you up with him? Did you really go out with him?”

“Yeah, what was I supposed to do, turn him away at the door?”

“Oh man, I’m going to have a talk with my cousin.”

“Do you think he’ll actually listen to you?”

“No, all I can do is try.”

“Oh and that’s not the worst of my problems!”

Katelyn rolled her eyes. “I’m not sure I want to hear this.”

“Katelyn!” I was completely exasperated I had to tell someone, and I had to tell them now.

I gave her the puppy dog eyes. “Oh all right, go ahead and tell me.”

“Thank you. My mom invited Tony to come to the annual cookie party.”

“Oh no!”

“Yes, and you know who’ll be there.”

“Aunt Phyllis.”

“What am I going to do?”

“Well maybe Tony won’t come to the party, and then you won’t have to worry about trying to keep Aunt Phyllis from saying something that will embarrass you.”

“Nice try Katelyn, but he already told Mom that he was hoping he’d be invited. I told him that my Aunt Phyllis will be there, and he really doesn’t want to meet her. But he said that she sounds intriguing, and he looks forward to getting acquainted with her.”

“You’ve got to be kidding. Once he meets her he’ll change his mind.”

“Yeah, but then it’ll be too late.”

“What are we going to do?”

“I suppose we could try to keep them apart.”

“I remember the last time you tried to do that. Do you remember?”

“Yeah, unfortunately.”

“It was your Home Economics Teacher, wasn’t it?”

“Yes, don’t remind of that fiasco.”

“Oh but it was too funny.”

“Katelyn pleeease spare me.”

“Your Aunt Phyllis nearly knocked everyone over trying to get to your teacher. Boy was that a sight. Do you remember her pushing you and me out of the way?”

“Don’t remind me. I really want to forget that episode. But you’re right we don’t want to keep them apart. I don’t want a repeat of that incident.”

“Maybe we could try diverting the topic on to something safe.”

“That might be a good idea, although we might have a hard time finding a safe topic.” Taking a moment, I tried to think of something that might work--but my mind was drawing an empty screen. “The only thing I hope she doesn’t talk about is kissing. I don’t think I could handle having Tony hear about how onions make my Uncle’s breathe stink.”

“Me neither.”

“Now, back to the dates he’s setting me up on.
